Event Su2:
Torrey Pines State Reserve
Trip |
Date |
Sunday, March 7, 6:30 am to 2 pm
| Status: Closed |
Description |
Torrey Pines State Reserve is one of the crown jewels in the California State Park system. The reserve consists of 2000 acres of land as it was before San Diego was developed. We will see the chaparral plant community, rare and elegant Torrey Pines, miles of unspoiled beaches, and a lagoon that is vital to migrating seabirds. In one area, participants will be able to search for birds in habitats as diverse as pelagic, beach, sandstone cliff, coastal lagoon, pine woodland, and chaparral. Jack Friery is an active member of the San Diego and Palomar Audubon chapters. He has led the Audubon Christmas Bird Count in several areas of San Diego over the recent years and is a docent at Torrey Pines State Reserve. The rugged yet scenic Islas Coronados are situated in Mexican waters within sight of much of San Diego. Rock-loving coastal birds such as Black and American oystercatchers, Wandering Tattler, Black Turnstone, and Surfbird might be spotted. We'll observe breeding colonies of Brown Pelicans and Brown Boobies and we'll try to find the elusive Blue-footed and Masked boobies that have been seen off and on for the past three years. Event Su5: Native Habitats Trip
|
Date |
Sunday, March 7, 8 am to 1 pm
| Status: Limited openings |
Description |
While the birding will be excellent, our emphasis on this trip will be to survey the ecology of three San Diego County areas that are in different states of natural and assisted recovery. We will visit the Silverwood Wildlife Sanctuary, Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, and Famosa Slough. Silverwood has come back from the devastating 2003 Cedar fire with new native plant growth and a shift in animal populations. Sunset Cliffs is an area where restoration has just begun but with potential of becoming a premier 70-acre natural park. Famosa Slough is a wetland that has been saved from development and has over 180 species of birds as permanent or transient residents. Both leaders are active with San Diego Audubon: Susan Breisch as past educational outreach chair and David Kimball as webmaster and festival organizer. David participates in several San Diego area native plant restoration projects.
