FIELD TRIP LEADERS WANTED:

San Diego Audubon's Field Trip Committee is recruiting volunteers to lead and co-lead upcoming field trips. Knowledge and experience about birds and habitats is important but willingness and enthusiasm to share with others are very desirable as well. We also need help planning and setting up future field trips. If you are interested, please contact Claude Edwards

Note: Tecolote Canyon birdwalks take place on the 4th Saturday of each month led by volunteer Anitra Kaye. They start at 9 am from the Tecolote Nature Center, Thomas Guide 1268, F-2, (858) 581-9959.

Narrow shorelines, cattail patches, numerous varied trees provide habitats for herons and egrets, ducks and geese, woodpeckers and blackbirds.

Leaders: Jack Friery, (619) 218-7342 and Paul Zepf

Memorial Park and Friendship Park are located in the midst of downtown Chula Vista and offer welcome green-space for human visitors and birds. They are situated a block apart but are very different in terrain and landscape cover. Memorial Park has a cement-lined creek and sloped ground with fewer trees. Friendship Park is generally flat and features a greater number of trees of different species. They can be busy with migratory birds such as flycatchers, warblers, vireos, tanagers and orioles.
From I-5 exit at E Street and turn left heading east. Go to Third Avenue and turn right. Go just past F Street and turn right on Park Street. Park along this road and meet by the Memorial Park restroom, 373 Park Street.

A mixture of water and land birds can be found including great blue heron, species of waterfowl, osprey and red-tailed hawk, as well as a variety of land birds.

Saturday, September 25, 8 to 11 am
Leader: Anitra Kaye; (619) 517-1168

Tecolote Canyon is one of several protected ‘urban canyons’ that still support native plant communities and associated bird life. Restoration activities have increased the area of habitats utilized by familiar birds such as California quail, California thrasher and California towhee, western scrub-jay, black phoebe, bushtit and wrentit. A host of seasonal migrants also pass through this enjoyable area.
Exit I-5 at Tecolote Road. Go east, away from the freeway, past Morena Blvd., to its terminus, which ends in a parking lot. Meet by the Nature Center. Restrooms.
