How do I register?
Registration opens in October 2017. We prefer you register online using our secure online registration system at Follow the registration link on the right side of the page.  The deadline for online registration is February 20, 2017.

If you are unable to use the online system, you may register by mail using the worksheet insert found in this brochure. Please note that many field trips fill before November 1, 2017. If you decide to use the mail-in option, be sure to register as early as possible.

There is a registration handling fee of $10 per person.

Can I just drop in?
While online registration is the preferred method of registration, you may register for any available event at the festival check-in desk. Please note that most trips fill quickly, but there is usually space in workshops.  The best way to get the trips and workshops you want is to register online.

Is there a Waiting List?
Yes.  If an event is full, the registration system will give you the option of joining the waiting list. If an opening becomes available, that opening will be filled from the waiting list, in the order in which people added themselves to the waiting list.  You will not be charged to be on the waiting list for a trip.

I am having trouble with registration. Who can help?
Please call Jen Hajj at (801)671-9505, during office hours M-F 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Pacific Time.

Where is the Festival Site?
The 2018 San Diego Bird Festival will take place in and around the Bayview Room at Marina Village Conference Center in Mission Bay.  The address is 1933 Quivira Way.  All field trips will depart and return from Marina Village, and workshops will take place in breakout rooms adjacent to the Bayview Room. Parking is plentiful and free.

How do I get around?
The Festival does not provide shuttle service between the airport and hotels.  The Dana Resort provides shuttle service to Marina Village each morning. The Supershuttle Bird Bus will be available in the evenings to take people back to the Dana from Marina Village.

The Festival provides transportation for all field trips.

Where do I stay?
The Dana Resort on Mission Bay ( is our official Festival hotel. The Dana is ½ mile walk from Festival headquarters. To reserve a room directly with the Dana, call toll free (800)445-3339 or locally (619)222-6440. Be sure to mention you are with the 2018 San Diego Bird Festival.

Can I camp?
Yes.  Campland on the Bay is the closest campground, about 5-minutes away by car. It has RV hookups. It is located at 2211 Pacific Beach Drive, overlooking Kendall Frost Preserve. Contact by phone at (800)422-9386.

Where do I eat?
Plan to have breakfast with us. Breakfast is provided to all registered Festival participants in the Nautical Room. Some field trips and workshops have food included in the registration. If food is included, it will be noted in the trip description. Pre-ordered lunches will be on the buses. You may order these lunches using our online registration system. Appetizers will be available at the Welcome and Thank-you mixers. The Thursday night mixers will have very light snacks only.  Our Keynote Dinner is a buffet dinner. Ask us at the check-in desk for ideas of local eateries. San Diego is famous for its craft beers, seafood and quirky eateries. We hope you will discover something new!

How do I check in?
The check-in desk is situated in the Nautical Room at Marina Village. We recommend you check in during the Wednesday evening events, but if you are unable to come on Wednesday, you can check in 30 minutes prior to the start time of your first scheduled event.

What if it rains?
Though San Diego tends to be well-known for its sun, rain occasionally happens in the spring. All trips proceed, rain or shine. Please dress accordingly, and be prepared for wet weather. Trips will only be cancelled under the circumstances that weather events have rendered the trip unsafe (e.g. flooded roads, lightning strikes, choppy seas) and alternatives are not possible.

What is the cancellation and refund policy?
If you are unable to attend an event for which you have registered, email Jen Hajj at to cancel before February 5, 2018 to receive a full refund. Refunds are processed as checks, and take 10-14 days to process. Cancellations after February 5, 2018 are not eligible for refunds except in the case of a documented personal emergency. The $10 per person registration fee is non-refundable.

The Festival reserves the right to cancel any Festival activity. If we must cancel a Festival event, registered attendees for that event will be notified via email. Attendees will be offered the following options:

  • Register for substitute activities of the same value
  • Donate registration fees to SDAS programs
  • Full refund.
